About SpeakGa

A Ga language companion, built on checked Ga

SpeakGa helps people learn and use Ga, the language of Accra and the Ga people of Ghana. It's a free app and a research project by Codetrain Foundation.

Meet Nii Obodai

In the app you talk to Nii Obodai, SpeakGa's Ga companion. Ask how to say something, what a word means, or for a verse in Ga, and he answers from the SpeakGa archive. When the archive doesn't have it, he says so instead of guessing, and the question is passed to the team so it can be answered properly.

What's in the archive

1,777 Ga words and phrases, including 847 entries in SpeakGa's checked dictionary. Every number from 1 to 999 in Ga words. 62,368 Bible verses from 2 full Ga translations alongside English. 6 stories and 3 poems and songs, and 8 samai symbols with their meanings. Sources include the Bureau of Ghana Languages' Ga Language Guide, a 1980 UCLA Ga conversation course and Storybooks Ghana.

Learn, read and play

Beyond questions, the app has short lessons, quizzes and word games, the Bible in Ga verse by verse, and Ga stories and poems. It works in any browser and can be installed on a phone.

Built with Ga speakers

Anyone can suggest a word, correct an answer or share a source. Every contribution is reviewed before it's published, and people who know Ga decide what goes in.

Who's behind it

SpeakGa is built by Codetrain Foundation in Ghana. It's an open research effort to give Ga a place in the digital world: better language data, recorded speech, and AI that only claims what it can back up.
